VANDYKE STITCH

This stitch bears little resemblance to the Van Dyke Stitch in Smocking. The appearance of this stitch is like a fringed braid.

Start with two Herringbone Stitches to start off the braid (steps 1 & 2). The third step starts just below the first stitch, and loops behind the cross without piercing the fabric (step 3). Take a large bite of the fabric to complete the stitch, coming up just below the previous stitch (step 4). Continue on for the length of the braid.

Hints:
  • Don't pull the stitches too tight, or the center braid will not look even.
