TRAILING STITCH

The Trailing Stitch, sometimes called the Overcast Stitch, is a way of making a Padded Satin Stitch in a fine line.

To make this stitch, first mark the line. Lay the thread that you're going to stitch around along the line. This laid thread is usually thicker that the stitching thread, and of the same color. Thread the needle with the stitching thread, and make small stitches right next to each other, like the Satin Stitch, with each stitch wrapping around the laid thread and taking a small bite out of the fabric. When you've stitched the length of the line, thread the needle with the laid thread and bring to the back of the fabric right at the endpoints of the line.

Hints:
  • This stitch has the appearance of a Bullion Stitch, except that it can be much longer, and it is attached to the fabric all along its length, instead of just at the endpoints.
  • In order to make the edges of the line nice and even, angle your needle so the each stitch is actually slightly tucked under the laid thread.

Uses:
  • Delicate stems
  • Outlines
