This stitch resembles a thorny spike or a fern frond, especially when the Cross Stitches are worked in finer thread than the "Stem".

Stitch a long Straight Stitch and couch with small Cross Stitches, with two "legs" of the Cross Stitch longer than the other two, as shown in this diagram.
