HIGHLY PADDED SATIN STITCH

This is the stitch to use when you want the Satin Stitch shape to be raised in high relief.

First, make a foundation by outlining and filling the shape with Outline Stitches, just as with the Padded Satin Stitch. Next, stitch overlapping Cross Stitches on the foundation stitches, starting with short and wide crosses and working outward to long and skinny crosses, as seen in the drawing below. This second step raises the shape as high as you want. Note that the Cross Stitches are worked under the foundation only; you don't pierce the fabric here. All the padding is on the top side of the fabric. The third step is to sew the Satin Stitches, working from the center of the shape outward, perpendicular to the final Cross Stitching.

Since a lot of thread is used for the padding, you have the option of stitching the foundation and padding with cheaper thread (in the same color) than you're using for the Satin Stitches.

Note that in this drawing, the foundation and padding are shown in different colors for clarity. In reality, pad the shape with the same thread that you use for the Satin Stitches.

A more common way to pad a Satin Stitch is to layer Straight Stitches (see the Layered Satin Stitch).
