HERRINGBONE STITCH

The Herringbone Stitch is easily adapted to smocking. Usually it is worked between two pleating rows or two half-rows, with fairly long stitches.

Each stitch picks up one new pleat and one old pleat.

As you can see with this drawing, the Herringbone Stitch makes a very interesting border when worked over 4 pleats instead of three, with a second row worked in the spaces in a contrasting color. This variation is equivalent to the Double Herringbone Stitch.
